The lay out of paintings and carvings, the choice of designs is intentional. The association of particular animals with one another in specific combinations where they're found within a cave are too regularized over space and time to be entirely coincidental. Caves themselves presumably had some sort of significance to people who made art in them. Some liked to depict mammoth, but ate a lot of hare and fox.
