There was this period in the 1970s where malls in the suburbs siphon shopping energy out of center cities. Cities wanted to get that back like get those shoppers back. In some cases they built essentially suburban malls stuck in the city. But in better cases, they took historic architecture and tried to make urban malls more connected to their environment.
