There's actually a Buddhist concept called nudita, which I thought was just joy. In one study, people who did this three times a day for one week increased their happiness and felt less depressed afterwards. Even as it relates to wanting things that you don't want, your partner could have some success that's not even something you've been wanting or striving for. But knowing that there is this mudita or comparison could be a useful thing.
