In the 90s, if you were an indie rock site, you would have been against Pearl Jam. They're really grandfathered into the classic rock canon at this point. I think that in a lot of ways, it's like why they were so popular was also in tune with the philosophical changes that were going on in 90s rock. Like Nirvana didn't have Mike McCreedy's ripping guitar solos.
