Introduction

In 1911, the Dutch physicist Pika Kamaling Oners made a discovery that nobody predicted. When he lowered the temperature of mercury close to absolute zero and run an electric current through it, he found no resistance. A century later, this has already been applied to make MRI scanners and to speed particles through the large Hadron Collider. We'd need to discuss superconductivity, our Nigel Hussey says. Sushitra Sebastian is Professor of Physics at the Kevin Digital Laboratory at the University of Cambridge. And Sebum Mondale was Fellow of Mansfield College, Oxford.
