Did This Pilot Fly VFR?

The pilot was mechanic before he was a pilot. He doesn't look as though he flew regularly for a profession. The weather was a little bit down. There were some areas less than v f r on the route around the time of the accident. Why didn't he file? Was he not current? It's kind of an odd flight because of the tremendous amount of restricted and alert air space between where he took off from and where his destination was. And if he knew the air space, he had to know that this massive restricted area existed.
