The Birth of Modernity in the Tour De France

The 1923 Tour de France was a pivotal year for the sport. The final chapter of the first world war is being closed, and the starting pistol for the second World War is being fired. This is a moment of junction where tactics that we now understand from the Tour de France are being explored and developed. It does seem to me that they are almost two different sports to different sets of demands being made on the body and the mind. Or am I wrong?
