I think that person felt that there was a question of authenticity that would be raised about my inhabitation of blackness. So this idea of going to her quote unquote homeland to find the material for her work to perform a certain essentialized authenticness. In some ways, plays into the ways the white imagination expects and hopes from you. I see in connection to that question you just posed, and tell me if this feels like a stretch as a connection.
