Calculus and Infinitesimals
The concept of infinity lets us tackle new problems that we couldn't before. Infinitesimals let us pretend that a sphere is made up of flat pieces, like a circle. Archimedes had the key insight that you could calculate the area of a circle. Everything becomes distance equals rate times time again, except only over an infinitesimal segment.
