Anxiety and the Neurotic Form of Authority
Anxiety is the human being's basic reaction to a danger to his existence. The great bulk of anxiety comes when some value we hold essential to our existence as selves is threatened. Authoritarianism becomes increasingly explicit, not because so many people believe in it but because they feel themselves individually powerless and anxious. We need to oppose totalitarianism and other tendencies toward dehumanization on one hand and to recover our experience of selfhood on the other.
