There are four common maladaptive coping strategies that parents will go to. One is using a pacifier when a toddler is upset for the very purpose of calming them down. Distraction with a toy teaches kids to ignore their feelings and just do whatever they need to do to feel better quickly. It's easier to hand a child a toy than wait for them to work through those big hard feelings.
