What Is Market Cap Weighting?
One of the first index funds that was ever created, and this is from a book by Robin Wigglesworth who writes FT AlphaVille. The plan was to invest an equal amount of money in each of the 1500 or so stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange. As a result, the trading costs were high and the recordkeeping was arduous. And inevitably, they folded the fund in 1976 and moved it into an S&P 500 market cap weighted tracker.
