White flight began in the 19 thirties, when banks used color-coated maps to help them decide which neighborhoods were safe and desirable. These colors ranged from green for new construction or safest investments, to yellow as a declining area that was almost always home to black residents. The major banks wouldn't lend to anyone trying to buy properties in these red line neighborhoods. This policy became known as red lining. And it rippled through the entire neighborhood.
