There was a long history of kind of informal marriages, or marriages that weren't fully legally recognized. European men would marry various local women in asia and africa. And then this would facilitate trade, right? They would become kind of the trade and diplomatic links between these different groups. And this could be good. Like it what comes across a lot in your paper is a lot of like, imbivolence and confusion and back and forth about what sort of relationships the dutch think are helpful and what they 're afraid of.
