Poverty is deeply stigmatized in the United States. People who donate plasma are doing something that's exactly the same, but the practice is linked to poverty. The industry itself doesn't like to have a lot of attention around what it's doing. When I first started working on this book, I thought I was going to find out that a few hundred thousand people in the US every year sell plasma.
