What Paradigms of Machine Learning Are Interesting?

The research we do is not directly guided by any application. We are experts in these latent state space models, neural network based models. The kind of problems that my lab is looking into is more related to the physical world. And I'm happy they're there, but you should know how to use them. It's still a tool.
