The curse, like many magics of its ilk, depended on how the subject thought on their intent. Hoaid exploits this fact by figuring out that if he can control his thoughts, he's at least able to communicate a little bit in a way that makes sense more than is usual for him at this point. The concept of deliberately forgetting something so that you are allowed to say it in the first place is very mind warping.
