Hugo and the English Romantic Poets
Hugo was a romantic writer, and comparing him with the great six romantic poets in english is instructive. Their lives stretched from the mid eighteenth century to the early nineteenth all six are born in the eighteenth century. Hugo comes a little later romanticism, the romantic movement, is up and running when he comes along. None of the six lived past 18 50. Wordsworth lived to be pretty old, but he died in 18 50. Hugo was in his eighties when he died. There were already streets named after him by then. People used to write him letters that said, to mister hugo on his avenue.
