The Carnivalesque
A russian philosopher from the nineteenth century called michael bacton developed this theory of looking at the history of western culture in terms of the carnivalesque. Throughout all western culture, there's been these feasts and festivals whereby the rules of society are thrown on their heads. But once the carnival is over, straight back to normal life, you can't laugh at the king or a politician. The very act of laughter deconstructs their power.
