The beginning of her story is found in chicago in 18 89, when she is 29 and her father has just died. She had grown up loving the books of charles dickens, and had been moved by their tales woe and want in orphans and bleak houses. As a woman, she reads an article in a magazine about a different kind of house in london,. home to a new organization that was providing social services to people in need in its neighborhoods.
