Freud's Melancholia

I think Freud works at a level that is sufficiently, I guess broad, but that's not even the word I'm looking for. In drives and their positions in on narcissism and introduction, Freud has this reflection about how science doesn't end the speculation. But since Freud is like, we can't wait for biology to catch up to where we're trying to go, we have to venture forth these speculative ideas. And really, with our speculations, we can modify and remove that top without changing anything fundamental.
