The Origins of Midwives
Early on in medicine, there was a professional class of women healers. They were often called midwives or obstetricians. From the Hellenistic period onward, they start to be called physicians. We have over 50 attestations of women physicians who rose to prominence. And so Antyukas of Tylos was the Meredith Grey of her time.
