There are certain things that are harmful to innovation and maybe that could be traced to some specific cultural beliefs. A low openness to new experiences in general can limit progress but when you look at cross cultural or across national comparisons, it's tough to draw any conclusions. There is something about the UK where This idea of betterment became culturally pervasive that you could improve your station in life and the world.
