Introduction
So-called virtual power plants, or VPPs, are all the rage these days. Broadly defined, they consist of distributed energy resources that can be grouped and controlled together in ways that benefit both customers and the grid. According to a leading recent study, VPPs can help avoid $17 billion of annual power sector expenditure in 2030. The US Department of Energy is also exploring ways to accelerate the deployment and integration of VPPs.
