Dumont's Monster Wave
In late 1826, the astrolabe had hit a storm in the middle of the Indian Ocean. According to Dumont, the wave was at least 80 to 100 feet high. Francois Arago knew a thing or two about waves and he thought Dumont's account was… bullshit. He said the academy had to implement a more rigorous and more scientific inquiry into wave heights.
