Do You Really Need to Own a Lot Less Code Than We Do Today?

Almost 90% of the kind of code that we used to write over the last decade or more is now commodity. My contention really is that we should own a lot less code than we do today. As developers, we don't necessarily like using services depending on other people. If something goes wrong, you want to feel like you know what's gone wrong.
