The 13th Symphony of Schostakovich
The music alternates between the tuba solo and a snaking, shallow and baseline that is quintessential Schostakovich. The first lines are Fears are dying out in Russia like the rays of bygone years,. Only in church porches like old women still beg for bread. For the next lines, the symbolism of the slithering, shallow line becomes clear. These fanfares, muted and distant, are, I'm totally convinced, Schostakvich speaking through Yevtuchenko.
