How to Move Up an Organization?

If you're going to move up an organization, I remember working with a manager at one stage and they were in the sales environment. It's worthwhile having some social capital that you've earned in an organization over time because it makes getting things done easier. The further you go up the organization, the more you have to be somebody who can rally a diverse group of people together towards some kind of common goal.
