In the Middle Ages, dead bodies were broken up into little bits and put on altars. Pope Formosius threw them in the river to make sure they didn't become a saintly relic. The body does get rediscovered by sympathetic supporters of Formosis who use it to do what Steven was probably worried about. There's so much bloodlust for these pups.
