Henry McDaniel's Life After the Civil War
After the emancipation proclamation, henry mc daniel fled his plantation and joined the union army. He suffered a number of different injuries in the civil war that left him at far from full strength. Even if he had been healthy, life for a former slave in post civil war tennessee was pretty bad. It would be another four years before henry would finally prevail and receive a small pension. But even after that, hattie's mother and sisters had to work in white people's houses as cooks and maids. When hattie was five, they migrated to denver, and ond there a thriving african american community.
