He's tapping into the contemporary taste for the gothic, for horror. He had started off trying to be a great man of letters and that hadn't worked out. The other thing that's really interesting about this is so much of his work is literary because of his training based upon specific texts. So what you've got here is ho got fusly becoming not only painter, but author as well.
