The Importance of Contextualizing American History

Rothbard started with his history books, Conceived in Liberty, was Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. The best way for authoritarians to get away with all their shenanigans is to dumb down the population. They lack context as you point out. All these factoids that in school, they have to memorize and regurgitate for the test. There's no shortage of content, but they're deprived of context.
