The Death of Spruce in the Hearts Mountains
Spruce has been the traditional tree species in this area for 300 years. It's often grown in a so-called monoculture, which means just the one species. The bark beetle has swept through plantations during hot dry summers since 2018. This is widely considered to be as a result of climate change but decision to cultivate Spruce forests goes back a long way in the hearts.
