"I got what they call major punishments or slugs four times in the first two years at West Point," he says. "My academics were terrible, particularly in math and related subjects" But a new tactical officer who had been a special forces officer in Vietnam convinced him to change his ways. He credits Major Barato for helping him straighten out during his last two years of college.
