Arent's Definition of a Pariah
In germany, there was actually a very strong fascination with extremely rich jewish people. They held an exalted status and were seen as being of the highest order in some cases. And this is obviously problematic for jewish people who want to be part of 'normal' life. So they could either embrace their new culture or remain different so that they don't have markers of difference - which would still make them feel like subhuman. In any case, discrimination does force people to mould themselves to fit a world that hates them.
