In 1995, two things happened that I would argue changed the course of Richard D. James musical development. One is that he had become friends with Tom Jenkinson and Luke Viber, aka Squarepusher and Plug respectively. And he began making music influenced by their particularly frantic style of drum and bass. The other is that in November of that year, the wire published an interview with avant-garde electronic composer Carl Heinz Stockhausen titled advice to clever children.
