The Pan Hui Myth and the Yao Rebellion of 1832

I found this chapter interesting and also unique in a sense that it kind of intervenes the scholarship on frontier studies and ethnic studies, but providing through a different perspective. The Yao are an ethnic minority and a very diverse group. They speak many different languages that are often mutually unintelligible from one group to the next. And in 1832, the Yao that were living in the mountainous borderlands of Guangdong Hunan and Guangxi revolted against the Qing state. In this chapter, chapter 6, I argue that the Pan who origin myth is the key to our understanding of the Yao identity, the Yao frontier and the rebellion in 1832.
