The Changing Concept of the Street
The people who paid for the rebuilding of private houses were the, on the whole, the leaseholders. The public buildings are paid for by a tax on coal, which actually yields an enormous amount of money. It's not enough to rebuild all the public buildings, but certainly makes an enormous contribution to it. John: You get the sense before the fire London is being an incredibly cluttered place.
