The Importance of Defenses
Psychologist Paul Bloom says Freud's aspect of talking about sexuality in ways that need to be discussed is "tremendous" We all can't be overwhelmed by stimuli and by anxiety all the time, so defenses are universal. And you tend to develop ways of coping that fit your family of origin. If dissociation is adaptive to your father raping you every night, and then you have to have dinner with them afterward, and pretend like nothing happened,. Dissociation becomes a very organizing defense for you.
