Chapin witnessed and reported on the execution of labor organizers. He wrote minute by minute accounts of each hanged man's pulse as stated by attending doctors. After watching the execution, he went to a saloon and got what he thought was black out drunk. But later recounted that he didn't remember anything of that night. The scene of the wilson murders is something that haunted him for the rest of his life.
