The History of Computing
Lisp is this pure distillation of programming because it was carefully carved from earlier work and existing theory. This wasn't a project that took, say, a human year to hammer out. The language evolved as moore gained more xperience and moved jobs. A key difference is that more slowly brod his language, folding in new experiences along the way. I think that has led to a well rounded and well loved programming language.
