The Hagen and Tenna, on Voyager was always 100% of the time pointed towards the Earth. It turned out not until 1989 was it clear that we were going to be able to do this. We ended up taking six of the eight planets. That established a protocol in planetary exploration because it seems like every mission since then has taken a picture of the Earth. And lots of people poo pooed this idea and people thought, you know, it's only going to be less than a pixel. How could this possibly be an interesting, an interesting picture? But as we all know, it is what Carl had to say about it.
How much has space imaging furthered our understanding of the Universe? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice learn the story of cameras on space probes like Voyager and Cassini and the exciting science of Saturn with planetary scientist Carolyn Porco.
