Encephalitis lethargica was first formally described by a doctor, Konstantin von Akonimo from the University of Vienna in the winter of 1916. It may not have just been one thing, but what these scientists and doctors were talking about was an illness that generally started with a gradual onset of vaguely flu-like symptoms.
