What's the First Sale Doctrine?
There's a legal principle called the first sale doctrine that enables any one who's bought the physical embodiment of ip, whether it's text or sound recording, to lend sell. The issue has arisen in the case of digital content because digital content is not covered by the firstsale doctrine. Digital book subscriptions are more expensive for libraries than buying the book and more expensive than for ordinary folks buying the digital subscription.
