The Danger of the World to One's Dignity
Before his conversion he might have been inclined to view himself in light how others see him. That's the danger of the world to one's dignity that I don't, I don't think I've made clear quite yet in this particular conversation. And so the thing is that one diminishes oneself and sees one's value in terms of the terms that the world give you. But we also need to recognize the fact that what happens to us is not entirely under our control. The social world contains within it all these diminishing features that we need to recover our dignity from.
