The idea of sharding is something that people have been doing since probably the 1980s. It was pretty advanced at the time, actually. But it's not bad to have mutable state in a database; it's bad to have shared mutable state. And by the way, all those capabilities still exist. They're just hidden from everybody behind nice, simple software as a service interfaces.
