Freud's Reading Process in Grediva
Reading Freud's Grediva alongside Jenson's original can feel like we're in a kind of director's cut version of a famous film. As ever with Freud, things are never as straightforward as they appear on the surface. But one more level of irony is that, of course, Freud suggests that all of the charm belongs to the original, to Jenson's text. Whereas Freud's own retelling and his subsequent analysis is a great persuasive writer, isn't he? It's full of charm.
