The Importance of Understanding Chinese
The software, the chat GPT software, is just manipulating those symbols in accordance to certain rules that it's got. What it's doing roughly is predicting what should go out next, given how those symbols were ordered in the past. It crawls through the Internet and can make predictions about what the next squiggles and lines should be. So just like you, if you're in that room, don't understand Chinese, but you're just operating at the syntactical level of the language.
