St. Augustine had a fight with northern Christians who said people can live a good life and not be sinful, he says. They have to get rid of their sins by giving their money to the church,. By what later the medieval church would call indulgences. He was a he turned Christianity into a religion of hate hatred against of total autocracy and authoritarian control. And that's part of what ended up it ended up making Rome a sort of outlier until the 11th century.
