The Origins of Rights in a Secular Democracy

Rights do not exist in a vacuum. They are the creation of law, which is a product of social organization and is therefore necessarily a matter of political choice. There are probably only two categories of rights that are truly fundamental and generally accepted. If there is room for reasonable people to disagree about them, then we need a political process to resolve that disagreement.
